Catch and Release

Jennifer Garner may possess the hardest-working eyebrows in show business, but Kevin Smith gets the acting kudos in this bittersweet romance about a woman whose life crumbles when her fiance dies just before their wedding. In an act of utter selflessness the dead guy's three best pals invite her to live with them, a plot move that's less about healing than marching her in lockstep toward a love-hate collision with an LA hipster (Deadwood's lanky Timothy Olyphant, oozing reptilian charm) who's got the dirt on the departed. As his wisecracking roomie, Smith keeps this contrived chick flick afloat, managing to steer past the kind of egregious product placement that would have capsized a less agile performer. Screenwriter Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) makes a soggy directorial debut. PG-13, 111 min.
