Cats New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 18 2009

This latest touring version of the insipid 1981 hit, about a group of cats cavorting under the midnight moon, offers an impressive display of dancing talent. A cast of 20 young performers move with feline ease through athletic jazz-ballet moves provided by director Richard Stafford, based on the original choreography by Gillian Lynne. But Andrew Lloyd Webber's pop score, set mostly to whimsical children's verses by T.S. Eliot, is too simpleminded and derivative to sustain much interest, and the production has a mechanical feel: whatever excitement and freshness the show may have once had has long since dissipated. All that's left to enjoy besides the ensemble's skill are the flamboyantly imaginative costumes by John Napier. --Albert Williams
