Cayucas, JBM Recommended Soundboard Image

When: Sat., June 29, 10 p.m. 2013

On Bigfoot (Dead Oceans), the recent debut from Cayucas, band mastermind Zach Yudin channels the breezy vibe of vintage Beach Boys by way of the somewhat less breezy vibe of early Vampire Weekend (substituting Caribbean influences for African). In fact, he seems to get most of his ideas secondhand: on “Deep Sea” he’s ballsy enough to borrow the instantly recognizable phrasing of Jobim’s inescapable “Girl From Ipanema,” and on “Ayawa ’Kya” he mimics the ersatz tropical bonhomie of Haircut 100. The record is ingratiating and pleasant, full of laid-back crooning, falsetto-loaded choruses, 50s-style retro guitar licks, and the sort of innocuous group vocal chants that boosted the Lumineers on their inexplicable climb up the charts—but it’s hard to imagine that in a year’s time anyone will care. —Peter Margasak JBM opens.
