Over the summer 90s Swedish hardcore band Refused—who if you're feeling less than charitable you might say lifted most of their sound, aesthetic, and stage moves from the Nation of Ulysses and the Make-Up, both led by Ian Svenonius—reunited to great acclaim, while Svenonius's own current group, Chain & the Gang, released an excellent new album, In Cool Blood (K), to almost no notice. It's tempting to call it cruel irony, but since Svenonius seems to consider such obscurity to be an indicator that he's sufficiently challenging his audience, the world "cruel" doesn't seem to fit. Like Chain & the Gang's two previous albums, In Cool Blood is built around stomping garage rock (see the Nuggets-worthy title track), but Svenonius has added second vocalist Katie Alice Greer to his rotating support cast of underground pop all-stars, and in spots they slow down and space out to explore groovy psych-soul—a solid addition to the long list of weird hybrids Svenonius has created over the years. —Miles Raymer Outer Minds open.
