Chair Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 20 2009

The cast of writer-director Chris Churchill's 2007 play is seated in the audience while a chair takes center stage. Either despite doing nothing or because of it, the piece of furniture becomes an object of intense speculation and argument for a very vocal foursome--two brothers and a couple on a date--and an odd-woman-out. Churchill's dialogue is repetitious, his structure aimless, and his absurd humor hit-or-miss. But the actors in this Co-Governors of Space production commit fully to his sporadically funny characters, delivering their bizarre remarks with complete earnestness. And the concept is fresh, if risky: on the night I attended, performers in the house outnumbered real audience members. Talk about uncomfortable. --Laura Molzahn
