One thing that's great about Chicago's emerging rap scene—about all of the city's scenes, really—is the absence of a single dominant style. There are plenty of distinct sounds that appeal to different subspecies of hip-hop head. If there's one up-and-coming MC everyone can get behind, though, it's Chancelor Bennett, aka Chance the Rapper. With his sharp mind for lyrics and elastic delivery—he can smoothly shift from a heartfelt croon to a nasal growl—the 19-year-old tackles everything from seething trap to sentimental R&B. Chance does just that on his recent mix tape, #10Day, with a little help from a team of local rappers (Alex Wiley, Sulaiman) and producers (Chuck Inglish, Blended Babies, Tree). Recently MTV2 interviewed Chance for a Chicago episode of Sucker Free, and actor-slash-rapper Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) took him on tour—if his career keeps heading in the direction it's been going, this might be your last opportunity to see him in such an intimate space. —Leor Galil ShowYouSuck, St. Millie, Manny Muscles, and DJ Iggy open.
