Chapter 27 | Chicago Reader

Chapter 27

Jared Leto packed on more than 60 pounds to play Mark David Chapman, the chubby creep who stalked and killed John Lennon in New York in December 1980. This drama, about the three days leading up to the murder, never overcomes its inherent ghoulishness, largely because Chapman, like so many mentally ill people, is a huge bore. His obsession with The Catcher in the Rye gets full play, but there's relatively scant attention paid to his evangelical Christianity and in general too little backstory to explain what drove him. First-timer J.P. Schaefer wrote and directed; with Lindsay Lohan, looking kinda creepy herself as a good-natured Beatles fan Chapman befriends outside Lennon's luxury apartment building, the Dakota.
