Charles, Dead or Alive

Alain Tanner's first film (1969) chronicles the political disaffection of a small factory owner (Francois Simon) who leaves his comfortable middle-class home for the wilds of personal freedom. This is much more than a geriatric Easy Rider—Tanner is one of the most intelligent and responsible radical filmmakers. Even though it's not in a class with his later Le retour d'Afrique and Middle of the World, this is a film that should be seen.
