Charlotte Hug with Fred Lonberg-Holm and Lou Mallozzi All Ages Recommended Soundboard

When: Sat., Sept. 27, 10 p.m. 2008

Though they’ve never played as a trio before, these musicians’ blend of shared history and fresh acquaintanceship makes it easy to hope that tonight won’t be a bad first date. In 2006 Swiss violist Charlotte Hug and local cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm recorded Hug + Lonberg-Holm (Flying Aspidistra), a thrilling all-acoustic set of swooping bowed exchanges and detailed pizzicato barrages. And in 2003 Chicago-based sound artist Lou Mallozzi appeared with Lonberg-Holm on the Punctual Trio CD Grammar (Rossbin), using electronic tone generators and a library of instructional records, soundtracks, and sound effects to transform the cellist’s chamber-music-delicate improvisations with violinist Carlos Zingaro into a hallucinatory sound clash. While the Chicagoans have played together for years, Hug and Mallozzi first met this summer in Zurich; they enjoyed working together so much that they decided to hijack one of the duo gigs Hug had booked with Lonberg-Holm. Charlotte Hug and Fred Lonberg-Holm also play Monday at Myopic Books. —Bill Meyer
