Charlotte: Life or Theater?

The young Jewish woman Charlotte Salomon completed several hundred paintings telling the story of her youth before she was murdered at Auschwitz; in this 1992 Swiss documentary Richard Dindo rephotographs fragments of the paintings, making conventional use of still images to document a forgotten past. But as the film progresses, his obsessive focus on detail animates Salomon's figures, and his inevitable failure to bring her back to life becomes a metaphor for all the futures obliterated by the Holocaust.
