Chasin' Gus' Ghost

First-time director Todd Kwait imparts a gee-whiz tone to this overlong 2007 video documentary about jug band music, an early blues variant epitomized by the Memphis Jug Band and Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers. Though Kwait digs up some nice historical tidbits, he spends most of the video fawning over 60s revivalists like Jim Kweskin, John Sebastian, Bob Weir, and Geoff Muldaur. The documentary concludes with extended footage of a Japanese jug band festival where the key interviewees jam with a new generation of Asian enthusiasts; the hokey presentation of the Japanese players only heightens the bland, professorial mien of the American contingent. 100 min.
