Cheap Smokes

Don't bother trying to make sense of this 2000 Greek feature by Renos Haralambidis, whose protagonist (the director, straining to be cute) prowls the empty streets of Athens one summer night, hanging out at cafes, dropping in on other people's ruminations, and wooing a young woman who's both frightened and enticed by his ardor. The motley night creatures—all smokers, naturally—are photographed as for an edgy fashion spread, and most of them espouse a faded existentialism, the bittersweet pop tunes on the sound track aggravating the film's fatuity. 87 min.
