Cherry Bomb

Local video maker Rich Seng has come up with a great idea for showcasing Chicago's underground filmmakers: the free Cherry Bomb DVD features one menu of 27 shorts and another menu of witty commercials for local businesses that sponsored the project. Many of the shorts have already been screened around town and reviewed in these pages, and of the newer ones, only two really knocked me off my couch: B$'s An Introduction to the Oil Industry, a chilling montage of low-resolution photos and graphics that demonizes the Bush administration's designs on the Persian Gulf, and Seng's Dear Palestine, a music video that explicitly compares Israel's slaughter of the Palestinians with the Holocaust. To elevate these two agitprop items above more playful or elusive work may seem unfair, but beside them the DVD's numerous pop-culture parodies and high-art reveries fade into irrelevance.
