Cherry Smoke The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 19 2010

James McManus's 2006 drama focuses on the passionate relationship between Fish, a hot-blooded boxer, and his girl, Cherry, a survivor of horrific abuse who nevertheless sees magic in the mundane. They've vowed to take care of each other, but Fish's violent temper and self-destructive streak keep landing him in jail. Supplying contrast to Fish's view of life as a constant slugfest are his brother and cut man, Duffy, and Duffy's motherly wife, Bug. Lavina Jadhwani's staging for the Side Project has a compelling, powder-keg intensity, but the fireworks never materialize because McManus gets lost in long, repetitive passages of rough-hewn love poetry, forgetting he has a story to tell. --Zac Thompson
