Cherrywood: The Modern Comparable Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Tue., June 22, Wed., June 23 and Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 8 2010

Sitting through the first 30 minutes of David Cromer's production based on Kirk Lynn's oddball 2004 script--a list of lines without characters--is like being at a party with strangers who won't talk to you. Cromer packs a cast of 49 into Mary-Arrchie Theatre's cramped space, and they enact a drunken housewarming party full of banal, elliptical, pretentious, seemingly random dialogue. But then a weird, melodramatic event gives order to the chaos, and the dialogue suddenly gains an ironic urgency. While Lynn can't seem to resist twee whimsy (magic boxes and werewolf milk abound), he finds psychological depth in the all-night party as transformational ritual. Cromer's graceful, understated cast make the strangeness ring true. --Justin Hayford
