Presented by Facets Cinematheque, this is the ninth Chicago edition of an annual touring festival that collects black independent works from around the world. The festival opens with Tetchena Bellange's documentary Black Hands—Trial of the Arsonist Slave, which revisits the 1734 torching of Montreal and the ensuing trial of a slave named Marie-Josephe Angelique (Fri 6/17, 7 PM, and Sun 6/19, 3 PM). Tickets for the Friday program, which includes a Q&A and reception with the filmmaker, are $15; all other festival screenings are $9. Miller Bargeron's Stubborn As a Mule and John Eisler's Slave Reparations: The Final Passage are short documentaries focusing on the knotty issue of reparations to slave descendents in the U.S. (Sat 6/18, 2 PM, and Sun 6/19, 7 PM). Christian Faure's drama Dancing Forever tells the story of a young black girl, growing up in predominantly white Breton, who travels to New York City to become a professional dancer (Sat 6/18, 8:30 PM, and Thu 6/23, 6:30 PM). Carvin Eison's documentary Shadows of the Lynching Tree examines the legacy of lynching in America (Sun 6/19, 5 PM, and Mon 6/20, 6:30 PM), with Eison taking questions after each screening. And another pair of documentaries, Delia Ackerman's Hands of God and Silva Lucas's Sons of Bekos, explores the African musical influence in Peru and Colombia, respectively (Mon 6/20 and Wed 6/22, 8:30 PM).
