Chicago Irish Film Festival

The 12th annual festival opens with Ian Power's drama The Runway, in which a fatherless boy in County Cork comes to the aid of a Colombian pilot who's crash-landed on the outskirts of town; Power and producer Macdara Kelleher will attend (Fri 3/4, 7 PM). Andrew Gallimore will attend the screening of his documentary In Sunshine or in Shadow, which looks back at the 1985 boxing match in which Barry McGuigan of Ireland and Juan Laporte of Puerto Rico duked it out for the world featherweight crown (Sat 3/5, 8 PM). Roy Ward Baker, the highly regarded British director who died last October at age 93, directed this year's classic, Jacqueline (1956), about a Protestant family in Belfast that's plagued by the father's drinking (Sun 3/6, 2 PM). And Jeremiah Cullinane's Irish-Lithuanian documentary Book Smugglers revisits the 19th-century rebels who conspired to preserve their literary tradition amid the enforced Russification of Lithuania (Tue 3/8, 7:30 PM).
