When: June 26-28 2009
The Chicago Soul Music Festival runs Friday from 6 till 10 PM, Saturday from noon till 10 PM, and Sunday from 11 AM till 10 PM in Union Park, 1501 W. Randolph. The fest’s single stage features a wide variety of local soul and hip-hop acts and a couple of national headliners, and each day’s lineup features a fashion show in the early evening. Friday’s highlights include Chicago artists Kid Static and Lorenzo Owens; Saturday’s bill features locals Primeridian and New York-based neosoul belter Leela James, in her first Chicago appearance since the release of her new album, Let’s Do It Again (Shanachie), a covers collection with tunes by the likes of Angela Bofill, Al Green, and Curtis Mayfield. A gospel celebration kicks off Sunday’s program, and vibist Roy Ayers—an icon to rare-groove aficionados—headlines that night. Vendors will be on hand selling food, jewelry, local fashions, and more.
