Schubert is remembered for his songs and chamber pieces--he wrote more than 700 of them before he died in 1828, at age 32--but some of his symphonies and sacred music warrant equal attention. The tight architecture, vast scope, and inexorable flow of his Ninth Symphony--discovered by Schumann a decade after Schubert's death--dispel the lingering notion that the unassuming Viennese composer was merely a gifted miniaturist. A richly nuanced work that stakes middle ground between worldly Mozart and fiercely Promethean Beethoven, the symphony is the centerpiece of this week's CSO program, which kicks off the season-long celebration marking the bicentennial of Schubert's birth. Two idiosyncratic, rarely performed works from the same period--Auf dem Strom (for horn and piano) and Offertory for Tenor, Chorus, and Orchestra--are also included. The featured soloists are maestro Daniel Barenboim (piano), Daniel Gingrich, from the orchestra's superlative horn section, and the estimable tenor John Aler. The CSO's always-excellent choruses, of course, figure in the offertory as well as in Psalm 23 for Chorus and Piano. Friday and Saturday, 8 PM, and Tuesday, 7:30 PM, Orchestra Hall, 220 S.
