Chicago New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: May 11-15 2016

If it's true, as the plot of this warhorse musical suggests, that there's a sucker born every minute, then new audiences will be flocking to Chicago's Broadway and traveling productions forever. But the more seasoned suckers—those of us who've experienced the show in multiple incarnations since its debut over 40 years ago—may be excused for feeling a little antsy. Not that the Equity tour currently visiting town isn't good. Led by an irrepressible Dylis Croman as Roxie Hart, the jazz age chorine who parlays a homicide into a career, the show is well played, funny, and conscientiously sexy. It's just that (a) the post-Nixonian cynicism of Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse's book tends to come across as old news in our Trumpian present, and (b) the Fosse-style choreography has taken on a time-capsule quality, like a Kinescope of an old TV show. Maybe it's time for a makeover. —Tony Adler
