Children of Bodom, Abbath, Exmortus, Oni Recommended 17+ Early Warnings (Music) Soundboard Image

When: Sat., Nov. 26, 6 p.m. 2016

For their latest record, last year’s I Worship Chaos (Nuclear Blast), stalwart Finnish melodic death-metal institution Children of Bodom were down guitarist and long-term member Roope Latvala, who’d been in the band since 2003. It didn’t slow them down much: they still step fluently between churning classic gut-buzz swirl (“Horns,” which shows some waggish wit in its video) and a more elegant, epic style bordering on power metal (“Morrigan”). The album doesn’t radically reenvision any of the many subgenres Children of Bodom nimbly dabble in and mingle together—still, no one really wants that anyway. What you do get is a solid, well-paced blend of melodic indulgence and pummeling power, as witnessed on the fast-and-furious, no-nonsense title track. Vocalist and guitarist Alexi Laiho could probably carry the whole thing all by himself at this point, but for this tour he’ll be joined by riffmaster Daniel Freyberg.
