Children of the Beehive

The neorealist movement that broke out in Europe in the aftermath of World War II found its Japanese echo in this 1948 film, directed by Hiroshi Shimizu (whose prewar work, such as Mr. Thank You, showed him already inclined toward an extreme naturalism). The plot takes a band of children on a tour of the devastated countryside; though they are ostensibly led by a young returning soldier, it is the children who teach him how to survive.
