Chronicle of Poor Lovers

The behavior of fascist informers and gossipy neighbors living in close quarters is contrasted in this 1954 ideological drama set in 1925 Florence. A young printer moves into his sweetheart's neighborhood, then falls in love with the wife of a merchant. Political and romantic subplots erupt in realist rhythms—emulating life by alternating pain and joy without warning—as a restless camera generates deep-focus compositions that only occasionally appear contrived. The screenplay by Sergio Amidei, Massimo Mida, Giuseppe Dagnino, and director Carlo Lizzani was based on a novel by Vasco Pratolini; with Antonella Lualdi, Anna Maria Ferrero, Cosetta Greco, Bruno Berellini, Giuliano Montaldo, Wanda Capodaglio, and Marcello Mastroianni.
