Church Basement Ladies Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 27 2008

Four hearty, small-town Minnesota gals cook and "oh-yah-you-betcha" their way through their not-so-turbulent piece of the 1960s in this staunchly middlebrow musical comedy by Jim Stowell, Jessica Zuehlke, and Drew Jansen, based on a series of books by Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson. Volunteer chefs for their church's various weddings, funerals, and fundraisers, the women are occasionally interrupted in their preparations by the kindly minister (Evanston native William Christopher, cruising on autopilot in basically the same role he played on M*A*S*H for eleven years). Full of standard-issue sitcom antics and dispensable numbers such as The Pale Food Polka, the show seems tailor-made for those who like their musicals happy, harmless, and hopelessly, shamelessly lame. --Zac Thompson
