Irishman Cian Nugent (pronounced KEE-yen) is quite literally a poster boy for a new international iteration of American primitive guitar. He was just 19 years old (he's now 22) when he appeared on the cover of Imaginational Anthem Volume Three, a periodic survey of solo acoustic guitar talent curated by Tompkins Square Records. But both his contribution to that disc and his first solo album, Childhood, Christian Lies & Slaughter (Incunabulum/AudioMer), recorded one year earlier, reveal a comprehensive assimilation of the compositional and instrumental techniques pioneered 50 years ago by John Fahey, the first American primitive guitarist. Nugent's second long player, this year's Doubles (VHF), displays a similarly thorough grasp of the style's recent absorption of devices from minimalism and film music; he paces his unhurried but forceful fingerpicking with electronic drones and jaunty brass-band interludes, adding suspense, drama, and mirth to the record's two side-length pieces. Tonight is Nugent's Chicago debut and the first date of his second American tour; he'll play solo. —Bill Meyer Nugent also plays with John Allingham of the Cherry Blossoms Friday at 10 PM at the Hideout.
