Cinderella Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Jan. 4 2015

Originally written for television in 1957, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella has been reworked for both TV (1965, 1997) and stage. This Equity touring production uses the show's 2013 Broadway remount, and the part of me who fell in love as a kid with the ’65 version (with Lesley Ann Warren as Cinderella) wishes it didn't. The score remains charming and vibrant (though additional songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein have been added), and the production itself is first-rate, packed with superb performances. (How strong is the ensemble? On opening night understudy Audrey Cardwell rocked the house when she stepped into the lead midperformance.) But Douglas Carter Beane's awkward update of the book strains to be funny, and adds needless complications to a fine show that doesn't need them. —Jack Helbig
