Cinema of Prayoga: Indian Experimental Film

This fascinating historical survey opens with D.G. Phalke's Birth of Shri Krishna (1918), which sets the magical tone by giving Krishna the quality of an apparition. With its frenetic montage of diverse subjects, S.N.S. Sastry's And I Make Short Films (1968) shows that the near orgiastic boundary crossing of the 60s reached India too, though it may also owe a debt to the surrealist combinations of Un Chien Andalou. In Pramod Pati's Trip (1970) fast-motion aerial townscapes are intercut with stills of statues to make present life seem fleeting. 90 min.
