Circuit | Chicago Reader

A gay Illinois cop (Jonathan Wade Drahos) flees his colleagues' homophobia and the loneliness of small-town life for West Hollywood, where the writhing bodies of the party circuit are considered interchangeable as long as they're muscular enough. At first he resists the drugs that fuel the scene, but soon he's losing mind and soul to steroids and stimulants. This independent feature by writer-director Dirk Shafer juggles too many subplots (an ex-girlfriend shows up, a cousin decides to shoot a documentary on the scene, a movie producer dumps his boyfriend for a younger stud), and while the disco rhythm of Glen Richardson's editing captures the parties' erotic anonymity, Shafer (himself a former Playgirl centerfold) never quite manages the incisive social critique his story seems to require. 120 min.
