Circus Circus Closing (Theater and Galleries) New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through June 16 2013

After he gets busted for selling pot, twentysomething Robert is sent to the state pen, where he's housed alongside violent offenders and mistreated by a sadistic warden whose every other word is "shitbag." Director George Robert Bailey introduces a circus theme to this Loyalty Productions staging, ostensibly to impart an unreal or dreamlike quality—but save for some halfhearted tumbling and juggling during scene transitions, it disappears quickly. Writers Brian Walker and Eric Welch (who also plays Robert) fill the rest of the drama's 75 minutes with prison-movie cliches and rambling, foggy-headed sermons about legalizing marijuana that sound like they were written under its influence. Like the drug it advocates, the show may induce involuntary giggles and make time slow down to a crawl. —Zac Thompson
