Circuscope Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through March 22 2015

Circus productions are often described as larger-than-life, but this one takes an unforgettably miniature approach. The Actors Gymnasium's Winter Circus grew out of charismatic starring clown Dean Evans's obsession with the tardigrade, a microscopic eight-legged animal that is virtually indestructible. That sensibility gives the show’s clowning and jaw-dropping acrobatics, from tumbling to the trapeze, a charmingly amoebic and cellular feel. With their professionalism, enthusiasm, and raw talent, the show's teen ensemble fits right in next to its four professional artists: besides Evans, there's Molly Plunk as his lovestruck foil, glamorous Meredith "Tommy" Tomlins on aerial silks and juggling, and Leah Leor (in the show’s best costume, inspired by Nick Cave’s Soundsuits) on aerial straps. —Marissa Oberlander
