Cirque Shanghai The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays and Mon., July 5. Continues through Sept. 6 2010

Though based on a Chinese folk tale about the sky's "nine ascending levels of wonder," Cirque Shanghai's fifth summer show at Navy Pier is far from celestial. The spectacular feats of the energetic but green Yulin Troupe are undercut by their passe set, costumes, and music. Even superhuman balancing acts look dated when performed in ice skating outfits and set to a Muzak-esque score. My jaw did drop at the finale, "Imperial Thunder," which involves four Evel Knievel types careening their motorcycles around the inside of an enormous steel globe. --Marissa Oberlander

Price: $14.50-$29.50
