Citadel | Chicago Reader

Rated R 86 minutes 2012

This solid horror feature by Scottish writer-director Ciaran Foy recalls such minor George Romero efforts as Jack's Wife (1972) and The Crazies (1973): it isn't too scary, but it commands attention with its idiosyncratic plot, setting, and tone. A young father (Aneurin Barnard), battling agoraphobia after his wife has been killed by thugs, must protect his baby from the ravenous demons that have materialized in a nearby housing project. According to a director's statement, Foy himself spent years wrestling with agoraphobia, and the movie is more effective when dealing with this real-life horror than when the monsters appear. The working-class Glasgow locations are striking throughout, grounding the story in recognizable images of dreariness and decay.
