Civil Rights Legs Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Mondays. Continues through Feb. 23 2009

This is the sort of thing you've got to be prepared for when you’re dealing with a fringe festival. Clearly animated by an old-school Beat notion of what constitutes edgy writing, Rory Jobst uses his tale of a cross-species romance to lay down a 32-minute stream of jazzy patter that would make Lord Buckley wince. The premise is kind of sweet: Victoria, a shy okapi (the African creature that looks like a collision between a zebra and a giraffe), is wooed and won by a lonely hipster Sasquatch named Mutt. But every time Mutt opens his mouth--and that's often--he can't seem to help making pseudo-stream-of-consciousness verbal filigrees that unintentionally satirize themselves. It's hard to know what Victoria sees in him. Part of the Rhinoceros Theater Festival. --Tony Adler
