Class Dismissed Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through April 26 2009

Jeffrey Sweet avoids most of the more prevalent 60s tropes in this amiable if meandering portrait of four college friends and a rascally ex-prof who opt out for life on a Vermont farm. But he gives short shrift to the shattering events his characters face. Boyfriend killed in Vietnam? Dad dying from cancer? Pregnant girlfriend marrying the other guy? No biggie. For a play set in very tense times, Class Dismissed exhibits a startling lack of tension. Still, the performances in Dennis Zacek's staging are warm and funny enough to carry us through most of the less-believable moments. And putting Marc Grapey in to play all the smaller roles is sheer genius: Grapey can save a scene with one understated sigh of exasperation. --Kerry Reid
