During the glory days of the UK punk scene, bands tended to fall into one of two categories: anarchic nihilists aping the Sex Pistols' troglodytic fury or art-school existentialists mimicking Joy Division's uptightness-as-art-form. The list of stated influences for locals Claw Toe—originally a home-recording project by Darius Hurley, owner of the Criminal IQ label, and now a live group that also features current and former members of the Mac Blackout Band, M.O.T.O., and Ratattack—contains almost exclusively acts from the latter category, including PiL, Killing Joke, and Depeche Mode. Drawing heavily from the music of such a specific time and place often results in songs that adhere too faithfully to their source material, but Claw Toe's recent self-titled EP (on Criminal IQ, natch) uses bits of psychedelia, industrial, and garage to build something unique from a well-worn set of blueprints. —Miles Raymer Autonomy and I Attack open.
