Lead singer and chief songwriter Chris Gottlieb spent years piecing together local punk four-piece Wide Angles, and in 2012 they issued their debut LP, Smile More, a worshipful offering at the altars of Jawbreaker and Crimpshrine. Unfortunately the band called it quits shortly afterward, but on the bright side, the split freed up Wide Angles’ members for other stellar projects: bassist Joe Gac now focuses on monstrous posthardcore outfit Meat Wave, and Gottlieb and drummer Pat Berry play in the trio Closed Mouths. This spring Closed Mouths self-released a self-titled tape (expertly engineered by Gac), and its moody, knotty postpunk hammers at your guts with dry, metallic guitar, throaty vocals, and thick, droning synth that fills out the bottom end. They channel the angular noise-rock of D.C. greats such as Jawbox and Girls Against Boys, but make it their own by piling on catchy melodies and warm midwestern charm. —Luca Cimarusti
