Closer Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through July 27 2014

Alice, vagabond stripper, and Dan, mousy obituary writer, meet cute in the ER. Before playwright Patrick Marber has given the audience any reason to care about their relationship, a year's passed, and Dan falls for personality-free photographer Anna, who falls for pornophile doctor Larry, who briefly tended to Alice in the ER. For the next two-plus hours, this quartet of underdeveloped characters betray and injure one another, sink into contemptuous self-recriminations, and switch partners every other scene out of pure dramatic expediency. You've got to work overtime to make this exercise in prefab cynicism a recognizably human affair. Director Patrick Belics has a mostly capable cast for his bare-bones Spartan Theatre production, but he rarely moves them beyond the fundamentals of this increasingly implausible clusterfuck. —Justin Hayford
