Clumsy Sublime Agenda Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater) Image

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 13 2013

This new play by Barrie Cole, who has a history of turning surreal flights of fancy into condensed sagas of troubled human relationships, is full of fantastical oddities: a misfit teenager peddling "magicified" thrift store items door-to-door; her pink-clad pill-popping Ponzi-scheming mother; two stir-crazy figures painted for eternity into a copy of Edward Hopper's Excursion Into Philosophy; and an aging gay man mourning his mother's recent death by "falling into emptiness" via a pair of magic boots. But neither Cole nor Curious Theatre Branch's mostly stellar cast finds much of consequence in the characters' interrelationships. This time the flights of fancy—stretching across two and a half hours—feel more like long trips, leading farther and farther from anything significant. —Justin Hayford
