Clutter Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through March 11 2012

Mark Saltzman's 2004 play tackles the curious case of the Collyer brothers, a pair of legendary hoarders who were found dead in 1947, in the Manhattan brownstone they'd filled with well over 100 tons of junk. Saltzman doesn't seem interested in understanding the brothers in any but the most superficial way, presenting them as cartoonish, codependent eccentrics locked in a fatal Laurel-and-Hardy routine. To compare and contrast, he gives us another set of brothers—police officers who learn to take care of each other while investigating the Collyers' deaths. Wayne Mell's staging for Madkap Productions struggles to find a tone, and Andrei Onegin's set looks more like a messy attic than a menacing accumulation of detritus. —Zac Thompson
