Cold Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 21 2008

Sure, the premise is too tidy: pathological introvert Nate and pathological extrovert Lyric meet on Christmas Eve, discover they're both pathologically lonely and tumble into a pathological romance. But because Dream Theatre founder Jeremy Menekseoglu's 90-minute two-hander operates with the surreal logic of a psychotropically enhanced swoon (both Nate and Lyric pop antidepressants like candy) its tidiness feels like the inevitability of a fable. Menekseoglu the writer has a gift for revealing his characters through telling details--perennially broke Lyric tries to impress Nate by taking him to the diner that serves the best tap water--but his performance as Nate is too scattered and broad to ring true, especially beside Courtney Arnett's hilarious, heartbreaking, expertly pitched performance as Lyric. --Justin Hayford
