Common Wealth

The Film Center launches a two-week retrospective on Spanish troublemaker Alex de la Iglesia with this accomplished black comedy (2000) about greed, murder, and being a good neighbor. An aggressive real estate agent (Carmen Maura) discovers a fortune hidden under the floor tiles of a dead man's flat, but she's unable to remove it from the building without tipping off the other residents, who've been trying to get their hands on the loot for years. An animated title sequence pays loving tribute to Alfred Hitchcock's mature period, which clearly inspired the movie's blend of suspense and gallows humor, yet Iglesia adds his own streak of social satire. In Spanish with subtitles. 105 min.
