Conduct Zero

A mercurial blend of comedy and drama, this youthful 2002 romance transposes elements of West Side Story and Rebel Without a Cause to a South Korean setting. There's the high school hotshot who falls for the A student; the good-hearted bad girl and her gang of tough chicks; the obtuse parent; the concerned teacher. But director Jo Geun-sik cleverly subverts genre expectations, puncturing the teen angst with periodic detours into slapstick and buffoonery and then switching gears again into martial arts action. In Korean with subtitles. 99 min.
