Conviction Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 20 2011

This based-on-fact drama by Oren Neeman draws parallels between an Israeli scholar found stealing a file from the Spanish National Archives in 1962 and the Inquisition-era priest whose confession is contained in that file. Both men struggle for faith and identity. Director Kevin Hart navigates dense historical content with grace and balances severe subject matter with humor and a sense of mystery. The script's mirror structure highlights the Inquisition's contemporary relevance in unexpected ways, but some emotional intensity is sacrificed in the attempt to shoehorn two narratives into a 75-minute play. Though Ami Dayan excels in his solo performance, redemption comes a little too easily and seemingly unearned. --Dan Jakes
