Corpus Christi The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 14 2008

Jesus and his disciples are recast as modern gay men in Terrence McNally's sometimes flip, sometimes sanctimonious take on the New Testament. Growing up in 1950s Corpus Christi, Texas, Jesus--here named Joshua--is bullied for being queer, but finds comfort in the arms of his boyfriend Judas. After wandering in the desert--where he's tempted by Satan in the form of James Dean--he gives himself over to a life of healing the afflicted (AIDS is very much on McNally's mind here), performing same-sex marriages, and defying an intolerant religious establishment. The play's portrayal of a loving god is undercut by its disdain for women, southerners, and the Catholic Church, and Wayne Shaw's Ludicrous Theatre Company staging can't overcome the script's shallowness. --Albert Williams
