A marriage of western and pulp sci-fi archetypes, this Independence Day knockoff set in the Old West is almost exactly what you'd expect. The filmmakers here (including Iron Man director Jon Favreau, five credited writers, and countless special-effects technicians) don't seem to have agreed on whether they're paying homage to these genres or mocking them; the movie ambles from one familiar setup to another, as if out of duty. Playing a variation on John Wayne's character from Red River, Harrison Ford gives an understandably bewildered performance, often appearing uncertain if he should take his lines seriously. Some of the other actors (Daniel Craig, Sam Rockwell) manage a little better.
