Crop Circles: Quest for Truth

This overlong and deadly serious documentary by William Gazecki (Waco: The Rules of Engagement) argues that crop circles are paranormal phenomena. Advocates present a variety of theories: the circles are caused by plasmas that have descended from the ionosphere; “mysterious other intelligences” are trying to send us a message; multidimensional objects leave imprints as they pass through our world; an underground aquifer might be involved . . . On-screen experts refute the notion that the circles might be hoaxes, but the fact that some pranksters have already confessed goes unmentioned, which seriously undermines the film's credibility. Aerial views of these amazingly complex patterns, some with more than 100 circles and other geometrical figures as well, suggest that they are related to contemporary earth art, but the fuzzy imagery of this video (transferred to 35-millimeter) is far from convincing. We hear more than once that the aliens have declined to say more because they know we're not ready, an explanation straight out of science fiction. 114 min.
