Crying, Told Slant, Fantastic Mammals 18+ Recommended Soundboard Image

When: Sun., July 20, 10 p.m. 2014

New York chiptune trio Crying understands that chiptune is silly. Though the genre has infiltrated the mainstream thanks to the likes of Beck, Kesha, and Skrillex, it remains a novelty there—and its sharp-edged video-game bleeps still make me picture skinny white dudes wrestling with Nintendo controllers. Plenty of the buoyant, hyperactive melodies on Crying’s 2013 EP Get Olde (Quote Unquote/Double Double Whammy), could’ve soundtracked a Sonic the Hedgehog game, but the songs counterbalance their chiptune goofiness with scruffy pop-punk guitars, rugged rock drumming, and Elaiza Santos’s beautifully sullen vocals. “Bodega Run” veers toward romantic synth-pop, and Santos makes taking a corner-store trip together (“Would you like to share a Yoo-hoo?”) sound as sweet as puppy love. —Leor Galil
