Curse of the Starving Class The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through May 22 2010

The dilapidated, termite-infested farmhouse at the center of Sam Shepard's 1978 drama (revised by the playwright in 2008) is a metaphor not only for the family that lives there but for the whole misguided American experiment. Built with high hopes, it's well past its prime now, and the owners--a drunk who's rarely home and his fed-up wife--can't sell it fast enough. Their optimistic son and rebellious daughter stand to inherit little more than some dead dreams and a lot of dysfunction. In Kyra Lewandowski's explosive production for New Leaf Theatre, Michelle Lilly O'Brien's set perfectly suggests decay, while the cast deftly capture Shepard's mix of heightened realism, black comedy, and scenery-demolishing violence. --Zac Thompson
