Cursive, P.O.S., Berg Sans Nipple Recommended Member Picks Early Warnings (Music) Soundboard

On their fifth full-length, Mama, I’m Swollen (Saddle Creek), Omaha’s Cursive show only flashes of the brilliance that poured out of them on Domestica—one of the seminal records in emo—nine long years ago. Front man Tim Kasher sticks to his signature vocal style, combining cracked whispers and slightly off-key screams, and his lyrics still burst with tangible emotion, their narratives rising and falling along with each song. But at the same time Cursive are increasingly sidestepping the hard, dirty attack of emo and getting more up-front about their emerging indie-pop sensibility—which is, dare I say it, upbeat. Nonrock instruments are nothing new for them, but on Swollen they go further in that direction than ever, ornamenting their clean hooks with piano and polished-sounding horns. I’m sure none of these flourishes will be enough to alienate Cursive’s cultlike midwestern following, though—that’ll take more than an album that falls short of the band’s high-water mark.
