Larry Gus is a Greek electronic musician signed to James Murphy’s DFA Records, and like most other acts signed to DFA, he sounds almost nothing like LCD Soundsystem or the Rapture, who still define the label’s aesthetic in many people’s minds. Gus has a background making rap beats in the mold of eccentric producers such as J Dilla and Madlib, who similarly favor lo-fi sounds and off-kilter rhythms. But on his latest album, Years Not Living, he’s reinvented himself as an eccentric pop performer, using samplers to make giddily psychedelic songs that frequently tumble down corkscrew-twisty paths a typical human backing band would have a tough time following. “With All Your Eyes Look,” one of the record’s relatively straightforward cuts, takes a basic Krautrock framework and piles it with hissy samples, layers of woozy horns, and the kind of demented vocal harmonies that Brian Wilson was really into at his most off-his-ass crazy. —Miles Raymer Cut Copy headlines; Larry Gus and Kirin J.
